Overview: car trip from Rovinj to Venice
In Croatia, there is no other city quite like Rovinj. Its proximity to Venice in Italy makes it unique because it has many similarities to the great Italian city. This is unsurprising, considering it used to be a part of the Venetian Empire centuries ago.
Rovinj is situated on the Adriatic Coast and is one of the most picturesque places on earth, which you've likely realized if you've visited or are visiting Rovinj. Its colorful buildings, romantic atmosphere, and quaint narrow alleyways make it a popular travel choice, but if you're looking for a true Venetian experience, you need to drive from Rovinj to Venice with a private car service like Daytrip.
Venice is a once-in-a-lifetime travel destination for solo travelers, groups of friends, and families. The sweeping Renaissance architecture, romantic bridges, and beautiful canals often blow visitors away. With its unique charm, it's a city that will continue to draw in countless visitors from around the globe.
Yet, the trip from Rovinj to Venice is just as interesting, if not more so, considering the many sightseeing opportunities along the way. When you travel with Daytrip, you'll get to make stops at places like Groznjan, Motovun, and Piran. Our friendly English-speaking drivers will even share a few must-know tips and insights about the landmarks you plan to visit.
About Venice
The island-city of Venice is an architectural masterpiece, but its foundation wasn't exactly planned. In 452, the Huns forced mainland Italians onto the lagoons. These refugees built their new home on an archipelago of over 100 small islands, driving strong timber poles into the marshy ground to hold up a limestone base for the buildings and bridges connecting them. Thus the Republic of Venice was born.
Venice was one of the most powerful European States for centuries, reaching its peak in the 17th century when it was the center of a maritime republic. It gave birth to incredibly unique cultures and lifestyles, drawing the attention of poets, writers, musicians, and artists, and is still recognized as one of the world's oldest tourist and cultural centers.
Despite its fall in 1797, Venice has managed to hold onto its place in the Western imagination and is almost endlessly featured in the imaginations of the young and old. It's not hard to imagine why, considering the city is filled with luminous marbled and frescoed palaces, stunning Adriatic coastline, sparkling lagoons, romantic canals, and gorgeous bell towers and domes.
From magnificent museums and historical churches to galleries bursting with artistic masterpieces and eateries serving mouthwatering meals, this ingenious UNESCO World Heritage Site feels like you've been transported to another time and place.
From Rovinj to Venice: travel tips
When traveling from Rovinj to Venice, there are a few travel tips you need to keep in mind to enjoy a seamless and hassle-free travel experience.
Pack light
If you're planning on traveling by bus or ferry from Rovinj to Venice, pack light because you'll need to carry your luggage on and off the ferries and boats you take if you aren't dropped off at your hotel. Packing light will save you the stress and sweat of carrying a heavy bag or multiple small ones as you try to make your way from Rovinj to Venice.
If you travel by private car with Daytrip, you won't need to worry about packing this though. Your driver will handle your luggage so you won't have to lift a finger.
Buy skip-the-line tickets
The queues in Italy are infamously annoying. Let's face it: no one likes to wait hours in line for a quick tour of some of Italy's and Croatia's most beautiful attractions. Before your trip to Venice, purchase skip-the-line tickets whenever possible for attractions along the way and in Venice itself.
Stop for sightseeing
When you ride with Daytrip, you can enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean coast to the fullest. No other travel option lets you stop for sightseeing along the way, and why wouldn't you want to visit Piran, the most beautiful town in Slovenia, or Grotta Gigante, the world's largest show cave, before you get to Venice?
How to get from Rovinj to Venice
Transportation is one of the most important aspects of a journey. To help you plan how you're going to get from Rovinj to Venice, we've outlined all the travel options below:
From Rovinj to Venice by bus
If you're on a budget, a coach bus is the cheapest way to get from Rovinj to Venice. Flixbus offers five weekly trips. Despite being a direct bus, the ride takes about five hours and 50 minutes, and tickets cost between $29 and $40.
However, the bus is slow and somewhat uncomfortable, and you can't stop and sightsee in some of the towns along the way, so keep that in mind before booking.
From Rovinj to Venice by ferry
One of the most popular ways to travel from Rovinj to Venice is by ferry. Venezia Lines operates a daily ferry, which can get you to Venice in about three hours and 45 minutes. Tickets cost between $75 and $100, making this the most expensive option if you're traveling in a group.
The ferry isn't the most reliable option since the single daily departure is still weather-dependent. You'll also want to pack lightly, as hopping on and off with lots of luggage can be challenging.
From Rovinj to Venice by private car
Daytrip's private car service is the fastest, most convenient, and most comfortable way to get from Rovinj to Venice. Daytrip lets you set your own schedule; your English-speaking driver will pick you up at your accommodation whenever you want, load up your luggage, and bring you to Venice.
But who wants to spend a day just getting from one place to the next? Instead of missing out on some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, Daytrip lets you stop for sightseeing along the way.
Perhaps best of all, Daytrip prices start at 65 euros per seat, making it more affordable than the ferry and far more scenic!
Things to do when you get to Venice
Venice is one of the most popular cities to visit in Italy. But the attention is well-deserved. It has incredible architectural delights, delicious food, and, who can forget, Aperol Spritz. Check out just a few of the best things to do when you get to Venice, and you'll see why this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most unique destinations on the planet.
Despite it being busy, you can still enjoy yourself. You just need to know where to visit outside of St. Mark’s. So, have a look below at our carefully curated list of a few of the best things to do when you get to Venice.
Doge's Palace
Very few places in the world are as flamboyant as the Doge's Palace. This candy-striped palace, tinged pink, dangles over the water's edge. Before it was a cultural attraction in Venice, it was the political heart of the Venetian Republic for more than 1,000 years and was the place where the Dodges were crowned and executed.
The Doge's Palace was also where Venice tied up prisoners and marched them across the Bridge of Sighs to their deaths. Doom and gloom aside, this palace's walls are decorated with famous artists' most beautiful paintings, such as 'Paradise' by Tintoretto. And when you visit, there's much to see and do besides the Bridge of Sighs and the wall art. You can also explore the palace's grandest rooms and its decrepit prisons!
Ponte di Rialto
Only in Venice will you find a bridge that's a work of art. The Ponte di Rialto is a marble-clad bridge that provides one of the most beautiful outlooks across Venice's Grand Canal. It's worth setting an alarm to come here to watch the sunrise. Numerous shops line its pathway and lead to the market at its end, which has been in operation for more than 1,000 years. History, views, and shopping, what's not to love!
Gallerie dell’Accademia
When Napoleon conquered Venice, he stole thousands of the city's best Renaissance artworks and moved them to France. Fortunately, many of these priceless artworks have been recovered since then and are now a part of the vast Gallerie dell'Accademia gallery.
Despite the many masterpieces on display, it's not nearly as popular as other galleries in Venice, making it the ideal place to enjoy the art without the crowds. When you visit, expect high ceilings and endless art by some of the greatest artists to have ever lived, like Tintoretto, Titian, Carpaccio, and Bellini.
When is the best time to visit Venice?
Spring is the best time to visit Venice, especially if you're traveling from Rovinj to Venice. The temperatures are lovely, the weather is sunny, and the shops are open. It's the perfect season for romantic gondola rides, pleasurable wanderings over cobblestone streets, and stops at hole-in-the-wall restaurants selling authentic Venetian cuisine.
Alternatively, come in the fall. In September and October, temperatures are still a balmy 75.2° F (24° C), the summer crowds have mostly dissipated, and accommodations and attractions are considerably cheaper.
Summer is the most popular time to visit Venice, so we recommend avoiding visiting in peak season. It's hot and busy, and accommodation prices are at their peak.

Highly Recommend Daytrip - Venice to Rovinj, Croatia
“We had a wonderful experience riding with Robert from Venice to Croatia and appreciated the very clear instructions that made it super easy to find Robert in as busy a place as Venice. We were slightly nervous crossing borders in the time of Covid but Robert handled it all with ease. We really enjoyed meeting Robert, he was a real pleasure. I had never heard of this service prior to stumbling on it online. The reviews were great and our experience was equally great! Even before our trip began, I had an email exchange with the customer service team and they were very friendly, helpful and professional. We will definitely use Daytrip again in the future and would recommend it to our friends and family.”

15 oct. 2021Such a nice experience. Definitely the best way to travel from Venice to Rovinj.
“My family had planned to travel from Venice to Rovinj, Croatia via ferry but when I checked the ferry prices, they were about $350 for 4 people and the ferry arrived in Rovinj too late for us to really see the city. I was very happy to discover Daytrip could get us there for about the same price but we could select the time of arrival. Not only that, but we could choose to see other things along the way. Our driver Andrea was incredibly friendly and spoke perfect English. We really enjoyed the conversation with him along the way. We learned a lot about Croatia from him. The van was very comfortable and it was such a relief after a couple weeks of hot train travel to be in an air-conditioned vehicle. We really enjoyed our stop in Motovun. A perfect little excursion along the way to a city we'd never have known to visit without the recommendation from Daytrip. There was apparently a delay along the way and google re-routed our driver through some back roads. Because of his knowledge of the area, he was able to find the right path by talking to locals. (My wife and I had an issue last time in Croatia because we were turned away at a border crossing that was only for local traffic.) I highly recommend this service and will definitely be using it again. Thank you, Daytrip!”
