Built in 1392, and embellished by its namesake Antonio Piccolomini in 1463, this angular castle once overlooked ItalyтАЩs largest lake. Since the RomanтАЩs the areaтАЩs controlling power sought to drain the lake, finally succeeding towards the end of the 19th century. The resulting plain is one of the the most fertile in Italy, giving a verdant, though not quite ancient, vista from the castle. Inside the Marsica Museum, overlooking its portico courtyard, is dedicated to the areas history. The museum covers several themes the lost lake, to sacred art and Iron Age weaponry. Please note: the castle is closed on Mondays.
