The traditional Madeiran houses are scattered across the island, but the village of Santana boasts some of the finest ones. These quaint wooden and thatched houses were originally constructed by farmers and other rural inhabitants during the island's early settlement. With their distinct sharp roofs and vibrant red doors, the houses showcase a smart architectural design that efficiently channels rainwater away, ensuring a dry interior during heavy downpours. The natural materials used in their construction keep the inside cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Most importantly, they are unbelievably cute and definitely Instagram-worthy! Often surrounded by a colorful array of blooming flowers, you can even step inside some of the houses free of charge. A few of them were converted into shops, where one can purchase unique handmade products or indulge in a refreshing Poncha, a local specialty, or delightful treats like honey cakes.
