The village of Vamos is as traditional as it gets. Its stone roads and houses, olive oil mills, busy tavernas serving fresh seafood and raki, and centuries-old churches tick all the boxes for a quintessential Cretan experience. Having existed since the 8th century, the village has survived the Turks, Venetians, and will surely stand after our time. Vamos is divided into two parts: the old town with historic architecture, and a newer part with tavernas and shops. Taking a leisurely walk through the village or sitting down in one of the tavernas is a good idea. Still, there’s plenty of other activities to choose from depending on the season. Whether you’re visiting olive oil, oranges, or cheese farms, discovering the local Orthodox churches, sampling traditional alcoholic beverages, or taking a Cretan cooking lesson, the liveliness of Vamos will keep you busy for the entire stay.
