July is the city's liveliest month. The Carcassonne Festival brings over 100 performances of music, dance and theatre, many held in the ancient amphitheatre. Late August and early September bring the Feria de Carcassonne, a lively Spanish-inspired street festival.
The medieval citadel is best explored on foot, though the cobblestone streets and uneven terrain can be challenging for wheelchairs and strollers. The lower town, Bastide Saint-Louis, is more accessible and easier to navigate. Arriving early in the morning helps you avoid the largest crowds, especially in summer.
