July is the city's liveliest month. The Carcassonne Festival brings over 100 performances of music, dance and theatre, many held in the ancient amphitheatre. On July 14, Bastille Day is celebrated with some of the most spectacular fireworks in France. Late August and early September bring the Feria de Carcassonne, a lively Spanish-inspired street festival.
The medieval citadel is best explored on foot, though the cobblestone streets and uneven terrain can be challenging for wheelchairs and strollers. The lower town, Bastide Saint-Louis, is more accessible and easier to navigate. Arriving early in the morning helps you avoid the largest crowds, especially in summer.
Tipping is not obligatory in France, as a service charge is usually included in restaurant bills. That said, leaving a small amount for good service is always appreciated. For exceptional dining experiences or helpful guides, a tip of a few euros is a thoughtful gesture.
The fortified Cite de Carcassonne is the centerpiece, with its ramparts, towers and the Chateau Comtal. Beyond the walls, the Canal du Midi is perfect for a scenic stroll or boat cruise. Place Carnot in the lower town hosts a vibrant Saturday market, and the surrounding Languedoc wine region is ideal for a vineyard visit.
France uses the euro (EUR). ATMs are widely available throughout Carcassonne, and credit cards are accepted at most restaurants, shops and hotels. It is a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases at local markets or in more traditional establishments.
French is the official language. In Carcassonne, English is spoken in many hotels, restaurants and touristic areas, but learning a few basic French phrases such as "bonjour" and "merci" goes a long way with locals and is always appreciated.
Cassoulet is the city's signature dish: a hearty slow-cooked casserole of white beans, duck confit and sausage. Look out for creme catalane (similar to creme brulee), local cheeses, tapenade and the excellent wines of the Languedoc region, which are produced just outside the city.
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant weather with fewer crowds. Summer is warm but very busy, particularly in July when the city hosts its famous Carcassonne Festival and Bastille Day fireworks. Winter is quiet and mild by southern French standards.
