Picton sits at the northern tip of the South Island. Blenheim is about 29 km (18 miles) away, roughly a 25-minute drive. Nelson is approximately 110 km (68 miles), around 90 minutes. Wellington, across the Cook Strait, is the main ferry connection point for travellers arriving from the North Island.
Most travellers are pleasantly surprised by how much there is to do. A half day covers the town and waterfront comfortably; a full day lets you add a Marlborough Sounds cruise and a quick detour to Blenheim's wine region. A full day gives you time to explore the pretty foreshore and town basin, walk or cycle part of the Queen Charlotte Track, visit the Edwin Fox Museum (home to one of the world's oldest surviving wooden ships), and take a scenic cruise or water taxi into the Marlborough Sounds. If you enjoy wine, Marlborough's famous Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are only a short drive away in Blenheim.
