Know more about traveling from Picton
Picton sits at the northern tip of the South Island. Blenheim is about 29 km (18 miles) away, roughly a 25-minute drive. Nelson is approximately 110 km (68 miles), around 90 minutes. Wellington, across the Cook Strait, is the main ferry connection point for travellers arriving from the North Island.
Most travellers are pleasantly surprised by how much there is to do. A half day covers the town and waterfront comfortably; a full day lets you add a Marlborough Sounds cruise and a quick detour to Blenheim's wine region. Having private transport makes it much easier to move between these spots on your own schedule without being locked into tour group timings.
It's ideal. Most travellers pass through Picton on the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing from Wellington. Rather than rushing through, building in a few hours â or a full day â lets you properly experience the Marlborough Sounds and the surrounding region before heading further south toward Kaikoura, Christchurch, or Nelson.
A full day gives you time to explore the pretty foreshore and town basin, walk or cycle part of the Queen Charlotte Track, visit the Edwin Fox Museum (home to one of the world's oldest surviving wooden ships), and take a scenic cruise or water taxi into the Marlborough Sounds. If you enjoy wine, Marlborough's famous Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are only a short drive away in Blenheim.
Picton is the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds, a stunning maze of drowned river valleys, forested hills, and sheltered waterways at the top of New Zealand's South Island. It punches well above its size â you get scenic harbour walks, wildlife, local wineries nearby, and the famous Queen Charlotte Track all within easy reach. A day here feels far more immersive than a quick stopover.
The Marlborough Sounds is a network of sea-drowned valleys forming over 1,500 km (930 miles) of coastline right on Picton's doorstep. You don't need your own boat â water taxis and scenic cruises depart regularly from the Picton waterfront and are one of the best ways to take in the forested ridgelines, secluded bays, and wildlife including dolphins and king shags. Even a short cruise gives you a completely different perspective of the landscape.
