Jane Austen's House Museum occupies the 17th-century house where Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life, and produced most of her major works, including Pride and Prejudice. After Austen’s sister died in 1845, the house was used as worker housing until 1947 when Jane Austen's House Museum was established. Today, visitors will find a collection of the Austen’s personal effects and furnishings, including music books with pieces transcribed by Jane, a Clementi pianoforte, and a Hepplewhite bureau-bookcase containing several of her works. There are also three pieces of jewelry owned by the author, including a turquoise and gold ring that had been sold at auction to American singer Kelly Clarkson. Because of its historic importance, the British government placed an export ban on the ring, and the museum was able to purchase it with the help of a £100,000 anonymous donation.
