Alma Vii Fortified Church

This medieval church, surrounded by defensive walls provided the Saxon villagers a place to come together during war and peace.

Om

First built in the 14th century, in the 16th century, the Saxon settlers of Alma Vii fortified their small village church by elevating the choir, and surrounding the whole structure with a defensive wall, guarded by four towers. Originally, church had Gothic ribbed vaults inside, but these were removed to make room for balconies in the 19th century. Recently restored, the church encourages visitors to take their time to soak in its historic atmosphere. The towers, which were used to store bacon and lard during times of peace, now offer panoramic views of the village and the rolling hills beyond. Exhibits inside provide insight into the lives of the villagers, and display artefacts from the region’s main ethnic groups. There’s even a small library, so visitors can sit back with a book in this quiet, historic setting.
