Fredericksburg, VA

From the quaint historic district to the Civil War battlefields, you can immerse yourself in American history in the charming riverside city.

Om

Also known as “America’s Most Historic City”, Fredericksburg is home to one of the most colorful histories in the United States. A highly prosperous town in the colonial period, the 19th century saw a surge of development. However, during the Civil War, its location midway between the two opposing capitals made it the site of multiple battles, and near constant bombardment and looting. Today, the 40-block Historic District is lined with charming 18th and 19th century buildings that offer a trip down memory lane. Take a tour of the Mary Washington House, which George Washington bought for his mother, or go peruse the 17th century Hugh Mercer Apothecary (established on Washington's recommendation). You can get even more local history in the 19th century town hall, which now houses the Fredericksburg Area Museum. Or head to the Kenmore Plantation, the home of George Washington's sister! To learn about Fredericksburg's Civil War history, visit the Spotsylvania Military Park, the site of four major Civil War Battles.
