Settled by the Celts in pre-Roman times, Hainburg an der Donau was largely forgotten by history. Following World War I, it became the easternmost town in Austria, and its only claim to fame was that it was the last stop before hitting the Iron Curtain. Today, the town offers visitors a surprisingly diverse range of attractions. The city’s fortified walls are well preserved, and there are still some typical medieval buildings, like a charnel house or a pillory - you can even contact Donau Incoming (incoming@donau.com) to arrange a medieval tour of the city where a costumed guide will immerse you in the town’s 750-year history. In fact, the 13th century ‘Vienna Gate’ is the largest surviving medieval gate in Europe and now houses the city museum. Standing high above the town are the ruins of Hainburg Castle, which gives visitors a challenging hike and great views.
