Pura Taman Ayun

This stunning royal water temple and its gorgeous grounds were featured on the BBC’s ‘Around the World in 80 Gardens’.

Om

Built in 1634 by was built in 1634 by Raja I Gusti Agung Putu, Pura Taman Ayun was the main temple of the Mengwi kingdom until it was conquered in 1891. Restored in 1937, the temple’s traditional Balinese architecture is accented with Chinese flourishes courtesy of its architect Hobin Ho. Surrounded by a wide moat, the temple complex is divided into four increasingly sacred sections. Visitors enter the temple through its single exterior gate, gaining access to the beautifully landscaped, but least holy, outer courtyard. A paved footpath brings visitors through the beautiful grounds and to the jaba jero, the temple’s holiest courtyard where you’ll find the most important shrines including five, seven, nine and eleven tiered meru’s. Please note: a sarong is required to enter the temple.
