Sultanhani Kervansarayi

The world’s largest rest stop for caravans was like a palace for Silk Road traders and their camels.

Om

Sultanhani Kervansarayi was constructed by order of Sultan Aladdin Keykubat I between 1228 and 1229, and stands as one of the of the largest caravanserais in the world. These rest stops were positioned one ‘camel day’ apart along the Silk Road, providing merchants with a safe space to rest and resupply. As caravan traffic diminished, so too did the Sultanhani Kervansarayi, which was left partly ruined until recent restoration projects brought it back to life. The 4.800 square meter ‘caravan castle’ is divided into two separate sections. One, accessed by a marble doorway adorned with beautiful geometric figures leads to a large courtyard surrounded by arcaded rooms, with a small mosque at its center. The other side is covered by vaults, and was more service oriented, with stables, storage, repair shops, a bakery, and two amazing Turkish Baths.
