About Vienna
Vienna is possibly the most majestic and elegant city in the world. Known as the City of Music, it is the center of classical music and the birthplace of many famous composers, such as Strauss and Schubert. Although such composers as Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn were not born in Vienna, they spent much of their lives there, composing the most celebrated works and enriching Viennaâs musical heritage.
While Vienna is mostly celebrated for its classical music, elegant architecture, and stunning cityscape, not many know that Vienna is home to the worldâs oldest still-operating zoo. Founded in 1752, the Schönbrunn Zoo has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (it's part of the lavish Schönbrunn Palace) and is home to more than 700 species. If you are traveling with kids, consider setting aside a few hours to explore its diverse wildlife.
As classy Vienna looks from the outside, it is from the inside. For three consecutive years, Vienna has been named the most liveable city in the world. This honor is chosen based on factors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, culture, and safety, with Vienna particularly excelling in the latter.
Vienna has a deep-rooted coffee culture that began at the end of the 17th century, making it the ideal destination for coffee enthusiasts. Viennese coffee houses are known for their small marble tables, the iconic Thonet chairs, and newspaper stands.
In the previous centuries, coffee houses served as gathering places for everyone, from intellectuals and artists to everyday people, where they could engage in conversation, read, work, or simply relax. So if you want to explore an authentic Viennese culture, take a seat at one of its charming cafes and enjoy a cup of coffee along with a traditional pastry, such as schnitzel or strudel.
From Cesky Krumlov to Vienna: travel tips
Before you begin your journey from Cesky Krumlov to Vienna, there are a few things to know or consider. To save you time, we have summarized the three main travel tips that will ensure a smooth and enjoyable stay in Vienna:
Get the Vienna Card
Vienna has a very efficient transport network, so consider moving around by using public transport. A great way to save some dollars (or euros, the local currency) is by purchasing the Vienna Card. You can choose from 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, or 7-day cards. The 24-hour card costs around $19 (âŹ17), and for an additional fee, you can add options like airport transfer or a 24-hour Hop-On Hop-Off sightseeing ticket.
Check the museum websites
Vienna is a museum city, with more than 100 to choose from. If you have a specific museum in mind, be sure to check their website for their closing days and any potential free admission days.
Bring a reusable water bottle
There are more than 900 public water fountains scattered all around Vienna, so make sure you bring a reusable water bottle to not only save money on water but also help the environment by using less plastic. An interactive map is available to locate all the water fountains but be aware that the fountains do not work during winter.

Things to do when you get to Vienna
Vienna is a city where boredom is a choice. With so much to see and explore, you will likely find yourself planning your next visit before your current one even ends! To help you make the most of your time, here are four recommendations that will suit everyoneâs needs.
For art and history enthusiasts
If history and art are what make your eyes light up, Vienna is the perfect destination for you. There is plenty to see and explore, but if we had to recommend just two places, they would be the stunning Schönbrunn Palace for history and the Kunsthistorisches Museum for art lovers.
To visit the majestic palace, make sure you book your tickets in advance, as otherwise, you may have to stand in line for hours to enter it. This palace, where the Habsburg monarchy spent the summers, is one of the most popular attractions in Vienna. Take a moment to explore the symmetrical gardens, where unique fountains and several sculptures stand.
Although the building itself is worth visiting, the *Kunsthistorisches *Museum holds an exceptional art collection of artists like Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Raphael. The museum is large, so set aside a few hours to explore its immense galleries and get lost in its artistic heritage!
For music enthusiasts
If classical music strikes a chord with you, then attending a world-class performance at the Vienna State Opera is a must. Even if you don't plan to see a performance, you can still take an informative tour to learn more about the opera and its stunning architecture. Bookings for tours open one month in advance, so be sure to plan ahead.
For foodies
There are so many restaurants to choose from in Vienna, for different tastes and budgets, so instead here are the three main traditional Viennese dishes you should try at some point during your stay:
- Wiener Zwiebelrostbraten: a traditional dish made of roast beef with fried onions.
- Wiener WĂŒrstel: Vienna is known for its varieties of sausages, Wiener WĂŒrstel being the most typical one, so make sure you try it at least once!
- Brettljause: a traditional Austrian charcuterie board that includes ham, bacon, cheese, bread, and pickles.
For families with kids
Vienna is a family-friendly destination, offering numerous activities for children. Kids will definitely love visiting Viennaâs zoo (which you can learn more about in the âAbout Viennaâ section) but if you are searching for more options, you must visit Prater Park. This amusement park has no admission fee, and the iconic Giant Ferris Wheel, a symbol of Vienna, greets you at the entrance.
When is the best time to visit Vienna
If you are seeking the best balance of the lowest prices and fewer crowds, then the best time to visit Vienna is from April to May and from September to October. During these spring and fall months, the temperatures remain pleasant and it will be easier to explore the city, as there will be shorter lines at the major landmarks. Additionally, if youâre planning to attend one of the iconic Viennese balls, October is the perfect month to visit, as it marks the beginning of the ball season.
Vienna is also known for its Christmas markets and becomes an especially popular destination in December, so make sure you book accommodation, restaurants, and tickets to the main landmarks in advance!

Incredibly delighted beyond expectations!
âOctober 28 Daytrip conveyed us from our Vienna hotel to Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic - a marvelous destination not easily or quickly accessible by public transportation. Arriving promptly, our driver, Petr, was thoroughly professional & a safe driver with an extremely clean, smooth running vehicle. He was concerned with our comfort & anticipated needs like cold bottled water & restroom stops after providing a short overview of our route. Along it he pointed out places & landmarks of interest. He is a delightful conversationalist from whom we learned a great deal about his country. Cesky-Krumlov bans cars on the old townĂąâŹâąs narrow medieval streets, but Petr parked as close as possible before escorting us & bringing our luggage to our lodging. Regarding information, pricing, & booking, Daytrip was very easy to deal with & quickly responsive - especially compared to another transfer service. Advance payment was not required. For our safety we got Petr's photo & ID information in advance. Hiring a private driver was well worth the convenience, substantial time saved, & stresses avoided.â
âThis is my second review of Daytrip which I feel appropriate to comment on to indicate my first positive review was no fluke, and in particular to acknowledge our driver, Andre. We travelled from Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic to Vienna, Austria. The first bonus was that Andre lives in the centre of Cesky itself, which made it easier to get ourselves and our luggage into the vehicle, rather than having to cart it to one of the car parks outside of the town. The second bonus was that Andre was a great conversationalist and was able to provide many insights into the history of Czech and also the current society, among many other topics. He even texted me a few days after the trip to follow up on a particular topic. Logistics and admin for the trip were no problem so I am very happy to again recommend Daytrip.â

Used Daytrip for rides from Vienna to Cesky Krumlov and next day from Cesky Krumlov to Prague
âWe had a great experience using daytrip. With both rides we had a sightseeing stop on the way. Both drivers, Pavel and Paul were both respectful, easy to be with and skilled drivers. They also both were helpful and knowledgeable about our stops at Hluboka Castle and Kutna Hora. Both were helpful carrying luggage and both had drinks and snacks for us. Ten stars for daytrip.â
âI used Daytrip three times in my European trip. I had a ambitious timetable and using Daytrip allowed myself and my daughter to experience more of Europe. We went from Vienna to Cesky Krumlov. From Cesky Krumlov to Prague and from Prague to Berlin. Each driver was right on time at 8am!! That I was very impressed with. Being on time was essential for me. Each driver spoke English. Some knew a lot of history and culture which was a plus but not an expectation . I wanted safe and efficient transportation. And Daytrip did not disappoint. Many times it was raining, and so nice to be able to go door to door.â
Maximize sight-seeing with On A Day Trip
âWe used this company to travel from Budapest to Vienna and from Vienna to Cesky Krumlov. I enjoyed being able to stop along the way to visit the sights we had chosen. Drivers were safe and very friendly. It was nice not to have to worry about navigating the trains system or the roads.â
This is a stress-free, affordable, and interesting way to see many sites and learn about Bohemia
âI had the pleasure of being the first customer of Daytrip and was impressed with their service. I serendipitously learned of Daytrip when trying to find an efficient way to get from Prague Airport to ÄeskĂœ Krumlov and then from ÄeskĂœ Krumlov to Vienna. The helpful folks at DayTrip responded to my request promptly and provided me with information to inform what stops I wanted to make along my journey. Because of the Daytrip's convenient and tailored service, I was able to fit in several additional sites and towns that I wouldn't have had time to see if I were going by shuttle, train, or bus. For instance, thanks to DayTrip's ability to customize my trip and to stop along the journey, I got to visit KarlĆĄtejn Castle, Melk Abbey, and other scenic towns along the way. Jan was my tour guide and driver. He was waiting for me at the airport when I arrived from the US. He was super knowledgable about the history of Czech Republic, ÄeskĂœ Krumlov, and the region. As a Czech, he was able to share his observations and experiences about Czech Republic now and during Soviet rule. His insight and knowledge made this trip really worthwhile. Also, he was accommodating and polite and essentially all I had hoped my tour guide would be. I really appreciated DayTrip's door-to-door service as it saved me a lot of time, stress, and hassle in trying to find a transfer from the airport to buses to various sites and from towns to cities. The service Daytrip provides allowed me to see sites on my schedule and significantly reduced my stress of catching busses and trains. Traveling with Daytrip really was a vacation as I relied on Jan's knowledge and experience to get to the sites that suit me the best. I highly recommend DayTrip to anyone traveling in Bohemia and the nearby area, as I understand Daytrip has plans to expand their service throughout parts of Europe.â
