About Amalfi
Located on Italy's southwest coast, Amalfi is a picturesque town nestled below the steep cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. Its history spans centuries, first coming to prominence in the mid-6th century under the Byzantines. Yet, it wasn't until the 9th century that Amalfi reached its peak. It became one of the first Italian maritime republics and rival cities like Venice, Pisa, and Genoa as a naval power for trade with the East. However, by the 11th century, King Roger II of Sicily subdued and annexed its power in 1131.
Shortly after that, in 1135 and 1137, Amalfi was sacked by the Pisands and became less important. Fortunately, Amalfi crawled its way back centuries later when writers and artists discovered its charms. It's since become an incredibly popular destination in Italy, famed for its mild climate, spectacular coastal scenery, friendly residents, delicious food, and tasty lemons.
With its rich history and beautiful surroundings, there's no shortage of things to add to your travel itinerary. There is the Arab-Norman Sant'Andrea cathedral, which can be found in the center of the town with its stripped Byzantine facade that has survived since the 6th century, and the Museo Arsenale Amalfi, a medieval shipyard that has been turned into an exhibition space.
From Rome to Amalfi: Travel tips
The last thing you want to do is have an awful experience when traveling from Rome to Amalfi, so you'll find a few of our best travel tips below.
Choose a reliable car service
Although beautiful, the Amalfi Coast is terrible to drive along if you're unfamiliar with the area. Not only are the roads incredibly narrow, but traffic is also awful â especially during the high season. You'll even struggle to find parking if you want to stop and sightsee.
Instead of driving yourself, take a safe and reliable car service like Daytrip. You'll get to enjoy a door-to-door ride from Rome to Amalfi and not have to worry about anything. Daytrip drivers know the roads, so they can get you to Amalfi safely and soundly while indulging your sightseeing urges.
Wear comfortable shoes
You'll need a good pair of comfortable shoes when you're traveling from Rome to Amalfi. You'll be doing a lot of walking, both at attractions like Pompeii and exploring Amalfi itself.
Chat with your driver
One of the biggest benefits of using a private car service like Daytrip is that you can chat with your driver, who has plenty of travel tips and insights into the places you want to visit in Amalfi. So don't hesitate to chat with your driver if you have any questions about the Amalfi coast or any specific requests. They are happy to help!
How to get from Rome to Amalfi
How do you get from Rome to Amalfi? This is a question on travelers' minds when planning a trip to this idyllic coastal town. Fortunately, if you're planning on visiting, there are a few travel options available that you can choose between, and we've listed them below.
Rome to Amalfi by bus
Both Flixbus and SITA offer daily trips from Rome to Amalfi, with the cost hovering around $18 to $26 per trip. Between the two coach lines, Flixbus usually only takes just under five hours, while SITA takes about seven and a half hours. So if you have time and want a cheap transportation option, traveling by bus might be your best bet.
Rome to Amalfi by private car transfer
Undoubtedly, the scenery along the Amalfi coast is attention-worthy, but driving along the SS163 â otherwise known as the Amalfi Coast Drive â can be a nightmare if you're not familiar with it. This road has numerous squiggly hairpin bends and awful traffic at certain times of the day. So you'll focus more on your driving than the incredible once-in-a-lifetime sights.
You can circumvent this issue by hiring a private car service like Daytrip to get you from Rome to Amalfi. Daytrip will handle the driving so that you can sit back and relax while taking in the views of pine-fringed bays, lemon groves, pretty villages, and Saracen towers. It's also fairly affordable to book a door-to-door car service. Prices start at just $100 per person, which is a small price to pay for reliability and comfort.
Rome to Amalfi by train
If you plan on taking the high-speed train from Rome to Amalfi, you must note that the train will only take you to Salerno.
From Salerno, you'll need to take a taxi, bus, or private transfer to Amalfi. The train trip takes about two hours, and the car or bus trip is about half an hour, making the total trip two and a half hours.
However, the time can vary based on the distance â the route â and if there is traffic. It will also cost you between $19 and $80 for the train ticket and $30 and $40 for the taxi ride.
Things to do when you get to Amalfi
Amalfi might be a small town, but if you're traveling from Rome to Amalfi, you might be pleased to learn that there is much to see and do when you get there.
Take an exciting boat tour of the Amalfi coast
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world, so why miss out on seeing it when visiting? You can easily book a thrilling boat tour that will take you along the Amalfi Coast, stopping at colorful towns, sea caves, coastal cliffs, and beaches.
Depending on your time constraints, preferences, and budget, you can take either a boat tour with a ferry or a small group boat tour. The budget-friendly option is via the ferry; if you're traveling in the summer, it is one of the best ways to sightsee along the coast.
However, if you don't like large crowds and want your trip to be a little more personalized, you should opt for the small group boat tour. These tours range from a few hours to an entire day.
Visit the beaches
You can't visit Amalfi without visiting at least one of the spectacular beaches. This Italian town has numerous beaches, but you might be surprised to learn that some will cost you money to visit.
There are, of course, free beaches, but you might come across a few VIP clubs where you'll need to budget more than $500 if you plan on lounging in a sun chair all day at the beach. There are also beach clubs that allow you to rent a lounge chair and umbrella in a quieter, more private section of the beach for about 20 euros.
Buy a souvenir at Vietri sul Mare
There are plenty of shops in Amalfi, but you shouldn't miss out on exploring other towns on the coast. The nearby town of Vietri sul Mare is renowned for its colorful ceramics- you'll find them decorating walkways, doorways, and roofs.
At Vietri sul Mare, you'll find distinctive polychrome majolica tiles and ceramics that have been produced since the 15th century! We recommend popping in at Ceramica Artistica Solimene since they have hand-painted ceramic tiles that feature gorgeous marine and rural scenes with land and sea animals.
When is the best time to visit Amalfi
Being bigger than other towns like Positano, Amalfi is a year-round destination. But this doesn't mean there aren't certain seasons and months of the year that are better suited to visiting. Although when you visit will depend on your travel preferences, the best time to visit Amalfi is generally in the spring or fall.
These seasons offer milder weather with balmy temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The spring and fall have minimal rainy days, and the warm weather makes strolling the long streets in the afternoon comfortable.
There are also fewer crowds and lower prices in the spring and fall than you would find in the summer during peak season. However, if you're interested in a festive vibe, visiting Amalfi in December might be best for you since the town features beautiful lights and divine food during this time of year.

Fantastisk chaufför i Egypten
Private Tour and Transfer from Rome to Amalfi Coast.
âI signed up for a private tour and transfer from Rome to Praiano on the Amalfi Coast and I was so happy I did it. My tour guide Alberto C. was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all the sights. He was able to give me insight into the areas I traveled through and taught me a bit of Italian! I also felt very safe and, although the cost is a bit higher then public transport for a single traveler, it is so worth avoiding the chaos of single travel with lots of transitions in Italy during the busy season. So worth every dime!!! I also had the great pleasure of making two stops on my trip. One to a winery (which was also fantastic) and another to Pompeii. If I had not done these in the way to Praiano I may not have had the chance. It was a really cost effective way for me to explore Italy in a relaxed and air conditioned way!â
