About Verona
Located in northeastern Italy, Verona has a population of just 200,000. It doesnât even rank in the top 10 most populated cities in Italy, yet it remains one of the country's most visited destinations. The cityâs significance dates back to the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages when it served as a crucial transportation hub. In more recent history, Verona gained fame as the setting for the heart-wrenching love story of Romeo and Juliet. As you can tell, Verona is a magical town, steeped in both history and culture.
Throughout history, Verona has faced and overcome numerous challenges. The city fell under French rule during the Napoleonic Wars, followed by Austrian control from 1815 to 1866. Despite these hardships, these periods brought significant changes to Verona in different areas such as architecture, culture, education, economics, and governance.
UNESCO has declared Verona a World Heritage Site to recognize and protect the city for its ancient monuments but also has an enormous legacy from medieval and Renaissance times. Verona is around 2,000 years old, so there really is a lot to see, including some ancient landmarks such as Arena di Verona built in the 1st century AD.
Apart from the historical charm, Verona is famous for being featured in several films, such as "Letters to Juliet". For fans of this romantic American film, it is a must to visit Julietâs House to leave a letter in the iconic red mailbox.
Verona is a city you canât describe in just a few words. Whether you are captivated by Shakespeare's tales or the ancient monuments, every step in Verona will reveal a layer of its deep-rooted history and art.
From Venice to Verona: travel tips
Prepare for your trip from Venice to Verona by mastering these travel tips. They'll enhance your journey, whether you're a novice or a seasoned traveler.
Get the Verona Card
The Verona Card is a tourist card that includes priority access, free entrance, or discounts to the most famous attractions such as the Arena, Julietâs House (make sure you book your visit in advance), Verona Cathedral, etc. You can purchase either the 24-hour or 48-hour card which respectively cost $29.50 (âŹ27) and $35 (âŹ32). Be aware that you are granted free entrance or discount just once per attraction. Oh, and it also gives you free bus rides in the city!
Book everything in advance
As Verona is a popular destination, it can get quite packed. Make sure you book in advance not only the accommodation but also the main attractions you are planning to visit, such as the Verona Arena and Julietâs House.
How to get from Venice to Verona
Although both cities have an airport, they are so close to each other that no direct flights are available. Instead, more efficient travel options will get you to your destination faster than the wait time you would encounter at the airport. Here are the three main modes of transportation for the route from Venice to Verona:
From Venice to Verona by bus
If you want to save some dollars, opt for a budget-friendly bus ride. Here are two of the most popular bus companies you can choose from:
- Itabus: there are two buses per day. One-way tickets cost around $8.70 (âŹ8). The approximate journey time is 1 hour and 25 to 45 minutes.
- Flixbus: buses depart several times a day. The cheapest tickets start from around $8 (âŹ7.50). The journey time is 1 hour and 25 minutes to 2 hours.
From Venice to Verona by train
Trains are often preferred by travelers from Venice to Verona. You can either opt for the high-speed or regional train, although the latter is not very convenient regarding its travel time (almost 2.5 hours) and pricing. The best option is the Frecciarossa high-speed train. These trains are operated by Trenitalia, and the tickets start from $27 (âŹ25). You will reach Verona in just 1 hour and 10 minutes.
From Venice to Verona by private car service
If you are looking for a way to make the most out of your trip, opt for a private car service like Daytrip. With Daytrip, you can tailor the trip to your needs by choosing the departure time and adding any sightseeing stops you desire to discover as you approach Verona. One of the most iconic stops you can add to your itinerary is the charming city of Padua, known for being home to the second oldest university in Italy. Padua is also famous for the UNESCO-listed 14th-century fresco cycles, which are spread across eight secular and religious buildings, as well as the worldâs oldest academic botanical garden (Orto Botanico). Take a walk around Vicenza which is included in the UNESCO-listed City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto. Finish your journey by exploring the medieval fortress of Soave Castle.
Things to do when you get to Verona
The Adige River weaves through the city and could offer some impressive views from a different perspective but unfortunately, the river is not navigable, so if you were planning to go on a boat tour, you might have to opt for another itinerary. You can leave the boating in Venice but donât worry, as there is plenty to do in Verona.
Hundreds of visitors each day pass by Juliet's House to see the famous balcony. And while Verona is closely tied to this romantic story, the city has so much more to offer. Whether you are planning to go on a tour or explore on your own, here are some of our favorite things that you should not miss during your stay in this timeless city:
Admire the majestic Verona Amphitheater
Arena di Verona is one of Italyâs largest and most impressive ancient Roman monuments. Although today the Amphitheater is located in the heart of the city, back then it was built on the outskirts to avoid crowds. Different kinds of shows were held there, from gladiator fights to exotic animal hunts. Nowadays, the Arena has been modernized and you can attend opera performances. You will find plenty of cafes around the area with a view of this antique masterpiece.
Soak in the views from above
The 285-foot-high Lamberti Tower is one of the most famous viewpoints of the city. The construction of this iconic medieval tower began in 1172. You can either use the stairs or the elevator but in case you choose the latter, you have to pay an extra âŹ1 if you have the Verona Card. Once you are at the top, you can enjoy the best panoramic views of the city.
Explore the churches
Just like any city in Italy, Verona is also full of churches. Some of the most impressive ones are the Cathedral of Verona, Basilica di Santa Anastasia, and the Church of San Fermo Maggiore. Each one of them is unique, offering its own architectural style and historical background, so make sure you visit them all! The entrance fee is around $4.30 (âŹ4), although you can also purchase one ticket to enter all the churches.
Discover the local gastronomy
The best way to learn about the culture is by trying the local cuisine, and there are two dishes that you should not miss. One of them is pastisada de caval, a horse meat stew that is known as Veronaâs most traditional dish. You also cannot miss *pearĂ *which is a sauce served with boiled meat. It is prepared only in Verona, so make sure you try it!
When is the best time to visit Verona
Like most southern European cities, the best time to visit Verona is from May to September. From late spring and early fall, you can experience warm temperatures without the summer crowds (peak season is July and August). So if you want to enjoy fewer crowds and not too warm temperatures, May and September are the ideal months. In both months you can expect temperatures from 51°F to 77°F (11-25°C).
If you are planning to visit the annual event "Verona in Love", bear in mind that during February the temperatures range from 37° F to 50° F (3-10° C) and there is a higher possibility of rainfall.

Fantastisk chaufför i Egypten
