Figueres is about 90 miles (145 km) northeast of Barcelona, roughly a 1.5-hour drive. From Figueres, Cadaques is another 20 miles (32 km) east along a winding mountain road through the Cap de Creus Natural Park, adding around 40 minutes. The combination makes for a well-paced day trip along the Costa Brava.
No, they are separate museums run by the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation. The Dali House-Museum (Casa-Museu Salvador Dali) in Port Lligat, just outside Cadaques, is the artist's former home and studio. The road between Figueres and Cadaques (the GI-614) passes through the rugged hills of the Cap de Creus Natural Park and is known for its sharp curves and steep climbs. It is perfectly manageable but can be slow, especially in summer. Parking in Cadaques itself is very limited, making a private transfer a particularly practical option for reaching the village.
Figueres has more to offer than just Dali. The Castell de Sant Ferran is one of the largest 18th-century military fortresses in Europe and offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The Museu del Joguet, a charming toy museum with a collection spanning many countries and eras, is also well worth a visit.
Cadaques is a strikingly beautiful whitewashed fishing village on a rocky cove that drew artists, writers, and intellectuals throughout the 20th century. It was a favorite haunt of Salvador Dali, who kept a home there. The village is perfect for a leisurely stroll, fresh seafood by the water, and a visit to the Salvador Dali House-Museum in nearby Port Lligat.
The Dali Theatre-Museum is one of the most visited museums in Spain and houses the world's largest collection of Salvador Dali's work. Designed by Dali himself, the building is a work of art in its own right and also contains the artist's crypt. Tickets sell out quickly, especially in summer, so it is strongly recommended to book in advance at www.salvador-dali.org.
Late spring and early autumn are ideal, with warm weather, fewer crowds, and fully open museums. Summer is peak season, especially in Cadaques, which can get very busy in July and August. The Dali Theatre-Museum is open year-round, though hours vary by season. Cadaques is quieter and particularly atmospheric in spring and late September.
In Figueres, look out for butifarra, a flavorful Catalan pork sausage that is a staple of local cuisine. In Cadaques, the focus shifts to fresh seafood thanks to the village's fishing heritage. A local dessert called taps, a rum-soaked cake, is a regional specialty worth trying. Both towns have good restaurants and market-style eateries near the main squares.
