Kotor is about 57 miles (92 km) from Dubrovnik, with a drive time of roughly 1 hour and 55 minutes each way in normal traffic. The scenic coastal route takes you along the Adriatic Highway and through the border into Montenegro, with stunning views of the Bay of Kotor on the approach.
Kotor is a popular destination and can get busy between June and August, particularly when cruise ships are docked in the bay. Mornings tend to be quieter, and the Old Town empties out somewhat in the afternoon. If you are flexible, a weekday visit generally means fewer crowds than weekends.
The Kotor Fortress trail above the Old Town is a steep but rewarding climb with panoramic views of the bay. It involves a few hundred steps, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The climb typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, and there is a small entrance fee. It is best done early in the day before the heat builds.
Montenegro uses the euro, so there is no need to exchange currency if you are already using euros. Credit cards are accepted in most restaurants and shops in Kotor's tourist areas, but carrying some cash is useful for smaller vendors, market stalls, and church entrance fees.
Kotor is a great place to sample Montenegrin coastal cuisine. Grilled squid, black risotto made with squid ink, and fresh seafood are local favorites. The waterfront area has a good range of restaurants and cafes where you can take a break and enjoy the views of the bay.
Kotor's pedestrian-only Old Town (Stari Grad) is a remarkably preserved medieval city surrounded by towering stone walls. You can wander cobblestone lanes lined with Venetian-era palaces and stop into historic churches, including the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon. The Kampana Tower offers sweeping views over the bay and surrounding mountains.
The Bay of Kotor is the deepest and most southerly fjord-like inlet in the Mediterranean, and it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dramatic scenery, with steep mountains rising directly from the water, makes the drive into Kotor one of the most memorable in the entire Adriatic region.
