An experienced Daytrip driver will meet you at your door in Puerto Aventuras and whisk you to Cenote Yokdzonot. Once there, you’ll have two hours to explore before rejoining your driver for a relaxing return trip.
Yes, swimming is the main attraction at Cenote Yokdzonot, and the cool, fresh water is wonderfully refreshing in the Yucatan heat. Life jackets are provided and required for all swimmers, making it safe even for those who aren't strong swimmers. The cenote has a maximum depth of around 130 feet (40 meters), but most visitors stay near the platform area. There's also a small jumping platform for the more adventurous.
Cenote Yokdzonot is suitable for families with children who can swim or are comfortable wearing a life jacket, which is required for everyone. The site has shallower areas near the platform where younger swimmers can enjoy the water under supervision. Children typically love spotting the fish and tropical birds. The on-site restaurant and clean facilities also make it convenient for families spending a few hours at the cenote.
The driving distance from Puerto Aventuras to Cenote Yokdzonot is about 162 miles (261 km), with a one-way drive of roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes. The complete day trip lasts around 7 hours and 15 minutes, which includes 2 hours of swimming and exploring at the cenote. The journey takes you inland through the Yucatan Peninsula's distinctive jungle landscape.
The cenote operates a small on-site restaurant run by local women that serves traditional Yucatecan dishes such as cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, panuchos, and fresh fruit waters. Bathrooms, changing facilities, and lockers are also available for visitors' convenience. Visiting the restaurant directly supports the local cooperative that manages the cenote and helps preserve this community-led ecotourism initiative.
Cenote Yokdzonot is a stunning open-air cenote located in a small Yucatan village near Chichen Itza. This sinkhole-style cenote is community-run by local Mayan women and features clear blue water surrounded by hanging vines and tropical vegetation. It's one of the larger cenotes in the region and offers a more authentic, less commercialized experience compared to busier swimming holes closer to the Riviera Maya coast.
Cenote Yokdzonot is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and arriving in the morning is ideal for a quieter swim and the best lighting for photographs. Sunlight streams through the open ceiling around midday, creating beautiful turquoise reflections in the water. Weekday visits tend to be calmer than weekends, when local families often visit. Allowing extra time to enjoy lunch at the on-site restaurant is also a great idea.
Bring a swimsuit, a towel, biodegradable sunscreen (regular sunscreen is prohibited to protect the water), and waterproof sandals. The site provides life jackets, which are mandatory for swimming. Don't forget cash for the entrance fee, food at the on-site restaurant, and tips. A waterproof phone case or dry bag is helpful for photos, and consider bringing a change of clothes for the ride home.
Cenote Yokdzonot stands out as a community-managed, less crowded alternative to the famous Ik Kil cenote near Chichen Itza. While both are open-style sinkholes, Yokdzonot tends to draw fewer visitors, allowing for a more peaceful swimming experience. It also supports local Mayan women's cooperatives, making it a meaningful choice for travelers interested in sustainable and community-based tourism in the Yucatan Peninsula.
