Fussen celebrates a lively Stadtfest (city festival) in summer with music and local food. The region also participates in Oktoberfest celebrations in fall. The Royal Crystal Baths and local theater scene offer year-round entertainment, and the Christmas market in December draws visitors from across Bavaria.
The old town center is fairly compact and mostly flat, making it manageable for strollers. The paths leading up to Neuschwanstein Castle involve steep terrain and are not fully wheelchair accessible. Shuttle buses run partway up, which can help, though the castle itself has some limitations.
Fussen is a very safe and welcoming destination. Crime rates are low and the town is family-friendly. Standard travel precautions apply, such as watching your belongings in busy castle areas during peak season.
The nearest major airport is Munich International Airport (MUC), about two hours away by car and the most convenient option for international travelers. Innsbruck Airport in Austria is also within reach and offers additional European connections. Memmingen Airport is a smaller, budget-friendly alternative roughly an hour away.
Neuschwanstein Castle is the star attraction and inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. Nearby Hohenschwangau Castle offers equally impressive views. The Alpsee and Forgensee lakes are beautiful for walks, and the Tegelberg gondola provides stunning panoramic Alpine views.
Germany uses the euro (EUR). Cards are accepted in most hotels and larger restaurants, but many smaller shops, cafes, and castle ticket counters in the Fussen area still prefer cash. It's wise to carry some euros with you when exploring the region.
Don't miss classics like Wiener Schnitzel, Kasespatzle (Bavarian cheese noodles), pretzels with sweet mustard, and freshwater fish from the local lakes. Pair your meal with a regional Bavarian beer or a glass of locally produced apple juice for a true taste of the region.
Late spring through early fall (May to October) offers the most pleasant weather for exploring castles and lakes. Summer is warm and very popular. Winter brings snow-covered scenery and a quieter atmosphere, though some attractions have reduced hours. Christmas markets in December are a highlight.
