Gubbio is conveniently located for exploring Umbria. It is about 25 miles (40 km) from Perugia, approximately 30 miles (48 km) from Assisi, and around 55 miles (88 km) from Spoleto. There is no direct train service to Gubbio; a car is the most practical way to visit and offers the added benefit of enjoying the scenic Umbrian countryside along the way.
Gubbio is a very safe destination. It is a small, close-knit Italian town with a low crime rate. Standard precautions, such as keeping an eye on belongings in busy areas during festivals, are sufficient. Roads approaching the town can be narrow and winding, so cautious driving is advised if arriving by car.
Gubbio's historic center can be explored on foot, but visitors should be prepared for steep, cobblestone streets and staircases. The town has installed a system of free public elevators to help navigate between levels. Wheelchairs and strollers may find some sections challenging due to the gradient and uneven stone surfaces. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is a must.
The highlights of Gubbio include Piazza Grande and the 14th-century Palazzo dei Consoli, which houses the Iguvine Tablets, bronze artifacts that helped decode the ancient Umbrian language. The Roman Theater, one of the largest surviving in the world, is still used for performances. A ride on the open-cage cable car (funivia) to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo on Mount Ingino rewards visitors with panoramic views over the valley.
Italy uses the euro (EUR). In Gubbio, it is worth carrying cash as some smaller restaurants, artisan shops, and market stalls may not accept cards. ATMs are available in the town center. Larger hotels and restaurants generally accept major credit cards.
Gubbio and the surrounding Umbrian countryside are famous for white truffles, which are celebrated each autumn at a dedicated festival. Local specialties include truffle-topped pastas and bruschetta, wild boar dishes, local honey, and hand-crafted cheeses. The town also has a tradition of producing Sagrantino and other regional wines. Taverna del Lupo is a well-regarded restaurant for traditional Umbrian cuisine.
Italian is the official language of Italy. In Gubbio, English is less widely spoken than in major tourist cities, though staff at hotels and most restaurants can generally communicate in basic English. Learning a few simple Italian phrases will go a long way and is warmly appreciated by locals.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal, offering mild weather and a pleasant atmosphere. May 15 is a highlight of the calendar, when the Corsa dei Ceri (Race of the Candles), one of Italy's oldest and most dramatic festivals, takes place. The last Sunday in May brings the Palio della Balestra, a medieval crossbow contest. Late October is truffle season, celebrated with a dedicated food festival.
