About Geneva

Geneva is Switzerland’s second-largest city and is best known as the “Capital of Peace.” Many international organizations, such as the WHO, the International Red Cross, and the UN’s European office, base their headquarters there. On your trip from Milan to Geneva, it will be easy to see why Geneva is so peaceful. It is nestled in the idyllic Alpine mountain range and has been a highly sought-after region for thousands of years.

Geneva’s Founding

Geneva's history stretches back to ancient times when it was a Celtic settlement, later evolving into a Roman city in 121 BC. The name "Geneva" originates from the Celtic root genu-, meaning an estuary or river mouth. This refers to its location where Lake Leman drains into the Rhone River. It was a crucial hub for trade and military activity for centuries as armies fought for control of the Alps.

Geneva’s History

In the 16th century, under John Calvin's leadership, Geneva became a focal point of the Protestant Reformation, transforming into a prominent religious and cultural center. The city continued to be a meeting place for the exchange of ideas and commerce. Following the Napoleonic Wars in 1814, Geneva joined the Swiss Federation.

Modern Day Geneva

Geneva is situated in a French-speaking canton of Switzerland, just 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from the French border. Switzerland has four official languages, with French speakers making up 22% of the Swiss population. However, due to Geneva’s large international community, English is widely spoken. Visitors to Geneva are able to get around with ease thanks to the multicultural environment. One million people travel to Geneva every year for excellent skiing, lakefront fun, and great views of the mountains, so what are you waiting for? Let’s go!

From Milan to Geneva: travel tips

Follow these travel tips so your Milan to Geneva transfer goes off without a hitch!

Check the weather forecast before starting your day

Weather up in the mountains changes quickly! A warm and sunny day can turn into a chilly evening once the sun is behind the mountains. Dress in layers so you are always prepared for whatever the Alps throw at you! If you plan on leaving the beaten path, sturdy shoes are a must on these hills!

Follow the local customs

Northern Italians and the Swiss value punctuality, orderliness, and calm, especially in public places. Be aware of your noise levels and strive to be on time for your restaurant reservations and any tours.

Have your passport close

Italy and Switzerland are both in the Schengen Zone and allow free movement of people across their borders without a mandatory passport check. However, Switzerland is not part of the EU’s customs agreements and may ask to inspect your vehicle for products entering the country. To keep your time at the border short, carry your passport in your personal bag and not in the trunk of the car.

How to get from Milan to Geneva

A trip through the Alps has beautiful views every day of the year. The only decision you have to make now is if you want to see that view from the window of a train, bus, or car.

Milan to Geneva with a private driver

Take your trip into your own hands with a private driver from Daytrip. You can plan your departure time on your schedule and see the castles and fortified towns hidden among the mountains.

Your Daytrip driver will pick you up from your address in Milan and help with your luggage. While someone else worries about driving the mountainous roads, you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Driving this route takes about half the time of a train or bus. Daytrip can get you to Geneva in under 4 hours, but why rush? You can access places like Fenis Castle and Fort Bard much more easily by car than by public transit, so spend your vacation exploring castles instead of waiting on a regional bus.

After all your sightseeing stops, you’ll be dropped off safely at your address in Geneva. With no rental car to return, you and your family can begin experiencing Geneva right away. Secure a seat in a comfortable sedan for $263 (€245).

Milan to Geneva by train

Trenitalia is Italy’s national rail service. It has direct trains three times a day from Milan Centrale Station to Geneva. Trains leave Milan at 8:00 AM, 2:35 PM, and 4:35 PM, even on the weekends.

The train ride will take 6 hours and 40 minutes, and ticket prices start at $80 (€75). Once you arrive in Geneva, the robust public transit network can easily get you to your hotel. Another option is a taxi; however, Swiss taxis are among the most expensive in the world.

Milan to Geneva by bus

Flixbus has 8 daily departures from Milan’s Lampugnano bus station to Geneva during the summer season. Ticket prices are between $29 and $51.50 (€27-€48) and include one piece of luggage and one carry-on per passenger. The trip takes between 5 and 7 hours, depending on the number of stops in other towns.

Bus drivers make stops at gas stations, and rest stops every couple of hours. They also generally have restrooms, Wi-Fi, and power sockets on board.

Things to do when you get to Geneva

Once you’ve seen all the hidden fortresses and quaint mountain towns between Milan and Geneva, it’s time to see Switzerland’s Capital of Peace.

Relax on Lake Leman

Lake Leman (also known as Lake Geneva) is the largest lake in the Alps. It is crescent-shaped and covers 224 square miles (580 square km), with shores in both Switzerland and France. Take a cruise on the lake to admire the natural landscapes, deep blue water, and backdrops of the Alps. In the summer, enjoy water sports like paddleboarding and swimming or watching yacht races.

At the part of Lake Leman closest to the city center, and where it empties into the Rhone River, you can see the Jet d’Eau. It is one of the tallest fountains in the world and is the most well-known symbol for Geneva. The jet can be seen from all over the city as it pushes 130 gallons (500 liters) of water per second 460 feet (140 m) into the air. While you are there, be aware of sudden wind changes, as they can splash you!

Take your time at the Patek Philippe Museum

If the Swiss are known for anything, it is watchmaking! At the Patek Philippe Museum, you can _watch _how 500 years of engineering and science have brought horology into the present day. Admire over 2,500 watches from all over the world and see what makes Swiss watches so uniquely popular.

Visit the United Nations Office

Like many international organizations, the European headquarters of the United Nations (UN) is located in Geneva. The _Palais des Nations _is open to tours for guests to learn about their role in international diplomacy and the organization’s history. If putting this on your schedule is a must for your Geneva visit, be aware that tickets need to be booked 3 months in advance. Visitors also need to arrive with a passport or EU ID card to enter the building.

Stroll the Conservatory and Botanical Garden

Next to the UN headquarters is the Conservatory and Botanical Garden. This garden is free to enter and has greenhouses and landscaped gardens with plants from all over the world. It is best visited in the spring and summer.

When is the best time to visit Geneva

The best time to make your trip from Milan to Geneva depends entirely on the activities you’d like to do. The Swiss are very outdoorsy, and it is easy to see why! With nature this beautiful, you’ll see locals and visitors alike outside every day of the year.

Summers in Geneva

Switzerland has excellent hiking, and with summer highs of 75° F (25° C), it has a mild climate that makes seeing the outdoors enjoyable for everyone. From Geneva, you can find hiking trails that fit all fitness levels. Do as the locals do and dress in layers so you are comfortable for your entire hike.

Even if hiking isn’t your favorite, summers in Geneva mean visiting Lake Leman, swimming, and picnicking outdoors.

Winters in Geneva

Although many other European cities lose visitors in the winter, Geneva sees a steady year-round population thanks to the excellent ski resorts nearby. The Alps have some of the best skiing in the world, and millions of winter sports fans visit annually.

When you aren’t skiing, walk around the Christmas markets in the streets of downtown Geneva for roasted chestnuts and mulled wine. Local vendors sell chocolates, gifts, and ornaments for you to take home to family and friends.

关于从 Milan 到 Geneva 旅行的问答

Is there a direct train from Milan to Geneva?
Yes, Trenitalia has direct trains three times a day from Milan Centrale Station to Geneva. The trip takes 6 hours and 40 minutes, and ticket prices start at €75. Trains leave at 8:00 AM, 2:35 PM, and 4:35 PM during the summer season seven days a week.
Can I take a direct flight between Milan and Geneva?
No, there are currently no airlines that run direct flights between Milan and Geneva. For this transfer, you will need to take ground transportation. You won’t miss the airport with the excellent motorways and frequent train and bus connections between Italy and Switzerland.
Is the train ride from Milan to Geneva scenic?
Yes, of course. It is difficult to find a non-scenic route in the Alps. Whether you travel by bus, train, or car, the natural landscapes of the Alps are sure to captivate you. Have your camera ready, and don’t be afraid to go off of the main routes to find the perfect 360° panoramic shot.
Are there border checks between Italy and Switzerland?
Yes and no. You likely won’t have a passport check, as Italy and Switzerland are both in the Schengen Zone and allow the free movement of people across the border. However, Switzerland is not in the EU and does perform customs checks on imported products like alcohol and cigarettes.
Why doesn’t Switzerland have many high-speed trains?

Tickets for Trenitalia’s direct route cost between $80.50 and $91 (€75-€85). These trains leave three times daily and will take you to Geneva in 6 hours and 40 minutes. You can order tickets online or at the train station, but it is recommended that you book in advance for weekend trains.

Daytrip
