About Geneva
Geneva is Switzerlandâs second-largest city and is best known as the âCapital of Peace.â Many international organizations, such as the WHO, the International Red Cross, and the UNâs European office, base their headquarters there. On your trip from Milan to Geneva, it will be easy to see why Geneva is so peaceful. It is nestled in the idyllic Alpine mountain range and has been a highly sought-after region for thousands of years.
Genevaâs Founding
Geneva's history stretches back to ancient times when it was a Celtic settlement, later evolving into a Roman city in 121 BC. The name "Geneva" originates from the Celtic root genu-, meaning an estuary or river mouth. This refers to its location where Lake Leman drains into the Rhone River. It was a crucial hub for trade and military activity for centuries as armies fought for control of the Alps.
Genevaâs History
In the 16th century, under John Calvin's leadership, Geneva became a focal point of the Protestant Reformation, transforming into a prominent religious and cultural center. The city continued to be a meeting place for the exchange of ideas and commerce. Following the Napoleonic Wars in 1814, Geneva joined the Swiss Federation.
Modern Day Geneva
Geneva is situated in a French-speaking canton of Switzerland, just 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from the French border. Switzerland has four official languages, with French speakers making up 22% of the Swiss population. However, due to Genevaâs large international community, English is widely spoken. Visitors to Geneva are able to get around with ease thanks to the multicultural environment. One million people travel to Geneva every year for excellent skiing, lakefront fun, and great views of the mountains, so what are you waiting for? Letâs go!
From Milan to Geneva: travel tips
Follow these travel tips so your Milan to Geneva transfer goes off without a hitch!
Check the weather forecast before starting your day
Weather up in the mountains changes quickly! A warm and sunny day can turn into a chilly evening once the sun is behind the mountains. Dress in layers so you are always prepared for whatever the Alps throw at you! If you plan on leaving the beaten path, sturdy shoes are a must on these hills!
Follow the local customs
Northern Italians and the Swiss value punctuality, orderliness, and calm, especially in public places. Be aware of your noise levels and strive to be on time for your restaurant reservations and any tours.
Have your passport close
Italy and Switzerland are both in the Schengen Zone and allow free movement of people across their borders without a mandatory passport check. However, Switzerland is not part of the EUâs customs agreements and may ask to inspect your vehicle for products entering the country. To keep your time at the border short, carry your passport in your personal bag and not in the trunk of the car.

Things to do when you get to Geneva

At the part of Lake Leman closest to the city center, and where it empties into the Rhone River, you can see the Jet dâEau. While you are there, be aware of sudden wind changes, as they can splash you!
Take your time at the Patek Philippe Museum
If the Swiss are known for anything, it is watchmaking! At the Patek Philippe Museum, you can _watch _how 500 years of engineering and science have brought horology into the present day. Admire over 2,500 watches from all over the world and see what makes Swiss watches so uniquely popular.

Mon expĂ©rience a Ă©tĂ© exceptionnelle.
