Also, the trip between Milan and Munich offers many new experiences to travelers. A Daytrip professional English-speaking driver can share their knowledge of the castle before you walk its illustrious and majestic halls. After you've sightseen to your heart's content, your driver will drop you off in Munich to begin your German adventure.

About Munich

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is the third-largest city in Germany after Berlin and Hamburg, with a population of about 1.4 million. It is located near the River Isar in Upper Bavaria, roughly 31 miles (50 km) north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is famous for its rich cultural scene, famous beer, football team, historical significance, and events like Oktoberfest.

Those visiting Munich can look forward to traipsing through cobblestone streets and alleyways while taking in the extraordinary sights seen throughout the city. But before you visit and drive with Daytrip from Milan to Munich, it's an excellent idea to learn more about Munich's history to understand why it is a city worth adding to your travel bucket list.

Munich began as a humble monastery before it grew into a settlement. The Duke of Bavaria ordered it to become a settlement when the monks in the area wanted to create a market near the River Isar crossing.

With the establishment of the market, crowds were drawn to Munich, and many began to settle in the region. The area evolved into a village, town, and then a city. During these periods of change, Munich was involved in many historical and cultural events that influenced everything from the city's history and architecture to its food and people.

Munich is now a laid-back and lively city that is a hub for travelers eager to experience its rich cultural calendar, historical sights, well-preserved castles, tasty craft beer, and interesting food scene. The city also draws in those who love to explore modern museums, beautiful churches, and opulent palaces and those who want to spend time in boutiques, cafes, and outdoor markets.

From Milan to Munich: travel tips

Those traveling from Milan to Munich are likely looking forward to the city's more than 60 beer gardens, Bavarian cuisine, numerous galleries and modern museums, and Olympiapark with its 360-degree view of the city.

However, to get to Munich, you'll need to drive more than 306 miles (492 km) via the A13 and A96. This distance is great and time-consuming, but it can be an exciting and memorable trip if you follow the travel tips shared below.

Don't forget to sightsee castles and chateaus with a private transfer service

When driving from Milan to Munich, remember to sightsee castles and chateaus. This route has an abundance of both, so you would be doing yourself a disservice by not stopping to explore.

Two that must not be missed are the Tratzberg Chateau and the Trostburg Castle. Both will transport you back to the Middle Ages with period furniture, art, and thirteenth-century atmospheres. But don't forget to chat with your Daytrip driver to get more recommendations.

Be sure to peruse the outdoor markets

Both Italy and Germany are famous for their outdoor markets, which exhibit year-round produce, from vegetables and fruits to raw honey, herbs, cured meats, flowers, and cheeses.

If you're traveling from Milan to Munich, you will have many opportunities to wander through outdoor markets. Along the way, places like Brixen, Bergamo, and Lostallo all have outdoor markets at different times that you can peruse and purchase an item or two.

Munich itself also has numerous markets, including permanent farmers' markets and Christmas markets in December.

Spend time at the airport

Often a Milan to Munich transfer will have you arriving at the airport if you have chosen to fly to Munich. If this is the case, you should get the most out of your Milan to Munich transfer by spending time at the airport.

Unlike other airports, Munich's airport is a place you'll want to spend time in with its numerous attractions, activities, and eateries. For example, the Munich airport has its own brewery that you can explore and begin your beer tasting early. It also has a huge observation area for those interested in watching aircraft take flight, a mini golf course, and an air travel exhibition.

How to get from Milan to Munich

Milan and Munich are popular cities that are often visited, so it should come as no surprise that you have several transportation options. However, not every transportation option will suit your travel needs, budget, or preferences. That's why we've shared insights into a few of the most commonly sought modes of transport below for those traveling from Milan to Munich.

From Milan to Munich by train

Taking the train from Milan to Munich is a little tricky, but it is a good option if you want to experience a scenic trip, depending on whether you take a day or night train. If you take a day train, you should expect to encounter two to three stops, making the trip incredibly long. On average, a trip takes upwards of 12 hours.

For example, you must travel by train with Trenitalia EuroCity from Milano Centrale to Peschiera Del Garda and transfer from this station to Munich's main train station. The stopover between the two trips is about an hour. The day trains are, however, affordable, with tickets ranging between $21 and $60 (€19.60-€56) depending on when you travel.

If you want to take the night train, you should note that only one trip is offered on most days. The train travels overnight, and you arrive in Munich in the morning. For some, this works, but if you're hoping to explore Munich when you get there, you might be too tired, making the trip not worth it.

From Milan to Munich by flight

Numerous flights from Milan to Munich are offered daily through different airlines, such as Swiss Airlines, Lufthansa, Ulendo Airlink, and Austrian Airlines.

Unfortunately, flights are often cumbersome because you'll encounter at least one change. The fastest trips take a little over six hours, and the longer ones take more than 12 hours because of long stopover times. Price-wise, flights are also the most expensive, with a one-way flight ticket costing as much as $730 (€681.50).

If you want to fly but not from Milan, you can take a train to Turin, Genoa, or Verona before flying to Munich. This tends to be cheaper, with tickets costing between $136 and $405 per flight. Surprisingly, the train and flight combination travel options usually take less time, with a trip taking between five and a half hours and six hours and 10 minutes.

From Milan to Munich by bus

Budget travelers should consider taking the bus. Although a few bus lines offer trips from Milan to Munich daily, the most popular and reliable one offering tickets is Flixbus.

On average, Flixbus charges between $30 and $40 (€28-€37) per ticket one way, and a direct trip takes about seven hours and 45 minutes. So, although it is cheaper, it takes a lot longer than other transportation options, like certain flights or private car trips with Daytrip.

From Milan to Munich by Private car transfer service

A private car trip with Daytrip offers far more benefits than flights, trains, and buses. If you travel with Daytrip, you're guaranteed a customizable trip where you choose the time, where you travel, and the sightseeing stops you enjoy along the way.

Daytrip also offers luggage handling services, pet-friendly cabins, and friendly drivers who don't mind answering any travel questions you might have to the best of their abilities. Private trips are also far more comfortable, luxurious, safe, reliable, and enjoyable than traveling by train, bus, or flight from Milan to Munich.

You won't encounter multiple stopovers, and you can drive directly if you choose to. These benefits aren't bad, considering a booking between the two cities starts at only $211 (€197).

Things to do when you get to Munich

Munich is a city that features beautiful buildings and boulevards, beer gardens, spectacular parks, arts and culture, and magnificent museums and churches. So, with so much going on, determining what to see and do when you get to the city can be challenging. That's why we've shared a few of the best things to do when you get to Munich if you're on a trip from Milan to Munich in the near future.

English Garden

Parks are not always exciting travel experiences, but they can be entertaining, and this can be said for Munich's English Garden. This park is huge and stretches from the northeastern city limits to the city center. As its name suggests, it features rolling English-style hills and open landscaping.

It's worth visiting not just for its greenery but also because it's home to not one but four beer gardens. It also has biking and jogging paths, a boating lake, and monuments like its Japanese-style teahouse, Greek temple, and Chinese Tower. Also, if you get thirsty, there are several kiosks where you can buy sodas and snacks while walking around or sitting and enjoying the weather and scenery.

Munich Residence

The Munich Residence is proudly the largest city palace in Germany. It originated in the late 1300s and transformed from a small moated Gothic Castle to an impressive towering palace after the Bavaria Wittelsbach dynasty took up residence there. However, the Munich Residence is named so because it was the seat of government and the residence of Bavarian electors, dukes, and kings from 1508 to 1918.

The Munich Residence has expanded its Gothic style to include an eclectic mix of Baroque, Renaissance, Rococo, and Neoclassicism styles, so it's a must-see. When you visit, be sure to explore the more than 150 ornately decorated rooms, which are known to be filled with clocks, sculptures, tapestries, furniture, and paintings of eras gone by.

Deutsches Museum

According to past travelers, the Deutsches Museum is a unique science and technology museum. It's home to several exhibits that showcase everything from aviation and robotics to musical instruments and bridges.

Those who choose to visit will be wowed by the more than 200,000 square feet (60,960 square km) of space and a recently renovated modern museum that has a little something for everybody, no matter their interests. If you plan on visiting in the near future, be sure to explore the 19 new and redesigned exhibits. If you're traveling with children, there is Kid's Kingdom geared toward three—to eight-year-olds.

When is the best time to visit Munich?

For most eager travelers, the best time to travel from Milan to Munich is in late September if they want to enjoy Oktoberfest. This time of year promises visitors lively beer gardens with overflowing mugs, traditional food and music, and more beer than they might ever see in their lifetime. The Oktoberfest is a perfect introduction to Bavarian culture and is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

However, this time of year tends to be more expensive with higher food, accommodation, and attraction prices. So, if you're on a budget or don't want to visit during Oktoberfest, you might want to visit during the spring.

This season promises pleasant weather, fewer crowds, less exorbitant pricing, and a toned-down, relaxed vibe. You might not get Oktoberfest in the spring, but you will get to explore the city's parks, museums, churches, gardens, and galleries leisurely.
