Buses run regularly from Santa Marta to Palomino, departing from Carrera 9 and Calle 11 near the market. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and costs around 15,000-20,000 pesos. Tell the driver you're going to Palomino as buses continue toward Riohacha. Buses drop passengers on the main highway, requiring a short moto-taxi ride into the village.
Palomino is generally safe for travelers. This small village has improved significantly in recent years. Standard precautions apply: watch belongings, avoid isolated beach areas at night, and use reputable tour operators. The backpacker community creates a social atmosphere. Strong ocean currents make swimming dangerous, so heed warning flags.
