About Rovinj
Rovinj in Croatia's Istria region is only home to about 15,000 yearly residents. This city looks and feels like Italy, but it's unique in its own right. It's often confused with an Italian city because of the Venetian-style buildings, churches, archways, streets, and monuments seen throughout. Which makes sense; Rovinj was part of the Venetian Empire until the 18th century.
Yet despite the heavy Italian influence, Rovinj is still very much a Croatian city. This ancient town, standing upon a headland, is a bustling fishing port on the western coast of the Istrian heart-shaped peninsula. The tightly crowded houses descend down to the seafront with their tangled cobbled streets and winding alleyways leading to cafes and towering churches like St. Euphemia.
Rovinj is also well known for its pebbled beaches and romance. Many who visit often remark on the numerous romantic places that can be found in this small city. In fact, some say it's the most romantic place in the Mediterranean. Considering the many islands like St. Andrews Island, St. Katarina Island, and Red Island right off the coast, there's definitely a lot to love.
Besides its magical islands, Rovinj also has one of the most beautiful national parks in the world – the Golden Cape. Swim on one of the many beaches, walk through the forest hiking trails, or picnic among the trees.
From Venice to Rovinj: travel tips
You don't want anything to ruin your trip from Venice to Rovinj. Follow a few helpful travel tips and you'll have an amazing day!

You'll be traveling along the Mediterranean coast, so why not enjoy it to the fullest? If you've booked a trip with Daytrip you can stop for sightseeing at Miramare Castle, the Lipica Stud Farm, the Gotta Gigante, romantic Piran, or the medieval village Motovun.
Book transportation in advance
Since transportation options are limited, make sure to book your trip in advance to guarantee a seat. This is especially true during the high season of July and August when trips between Venice and Rovinj are in high demand and often sell out. If you book in advance, you'll also get a better deal!

How to get from Venice to Rovinj
Struggling to figure out how to get from Venice to Rovinj? You're not alone! There are only three options: car, bus, and ferry. Although there is a train, it doesn't have a direct route from Venice to Rovinj.
From Venice to Rovinj by ferry
One of the easiest and most direct ways to get from Venice to Rovinj is by ferry. The ferry will take you directly from one port to another in about three hours. Tickets will cost about 70 to 100 euros, but the ferry only makes the trip once a week, so you have to work around its schedule. And make sure you reserve tickets well in advance as they sell out!
From Venice to Rovinj by bus
The bus is the cheapest way to get from Venice to Rovinj. The Flixbus coach runs once a day, five times a week, excluding weekends.
Unfortunately, you can't take the bus on a Saturday or Sunday. And whichever day you do travel you're going to spend the entire day on the bus. The ride takes about nine and a half hours and requires a change.
If you're willing to put up with that, a ticket will cost 30 to 45 euros per seat.
From Venice to Rovinj by Daytrip private car service
Daytrip's private car service is by far the most comfortable and convenient way to get from Venice to Rovinj. Unlike the ferry which only runs once a week, with Daytrip you can schedule a door-to-door ride whenever you want! Not only are you guaranteed a comfortable and safe experience, but you also receive insightful travel tips from your professional Daytrip driver.
But Daytrip isn't just a comfortable ride. If you want to experience the beauty of the Mediterranean to the fullest, we're also the only option that lets you stop for sightseeing! And since tickets start at 65 euros per seat, Daytrip offers a more reliable and personal service than the ferry for a comparable price. If you don't make any stops, you'll be in Rovinj enjoying a meal or walking the cobbled streets in just under three hours.
From Venice to Rovinj by train
There isn’t a direct train from Venice to Rovinj. You can take a train to Trieste, but from there, you have to take a bus to Rijeca and then another Rovinj. If that sounds time consuming, it is! The total travel time averages 11 hours!
Things to do when you get to Rovinj
Although small, this mighty town deserves a place on your bucket list. Here are some of the best things to do when you get to Rovinj!
Explore Euphemia Cathedral
One of the main attractions in Rovinj is St. Euphemia Cathedral. This baroque masterpiece is easy to spot; its soaring bell tower dominates Rovinj's skyline.
Built during the 17th century, St. Euphemia Cathedral might remind you of St. Mark's in Venice, which is unsurprising considering Rovinj was under Venetian control when it was built.
Head inside to admire the 15th-century statues of St. George and St. Euphemia, the marble altar, and a sarcophagus containing relics of St. Euphemia. When you're done, be sure to scale the 61-meter-tall campanile for panoramic views of the city and coast. If it's a clear day, you might even glimpse the Alps to the north!
Roam Rovinj port
Head down to Rovinj's historic port for a waterfront stroll, grab a leisurely bite to eat, learn about fishing, take a diving course, or even set sail! The crystalline waters and beautifully painted homes that crown the waterfront make for a perfectly Instagram photo-worthy backdrop.
Make a daytrip to Pula
Though it's not technically in Rovinj, if you love history, make sure to add a trip to Pula to your itinerary. The capital of Istria is home to one of the world's best-preserved Roman amphitheaters. You can walk through and under the arena to learn more about its facilities, including the tunnels the gladiators used to access the fighting pit.
When is the best time to visit Rovinj
Since Rovinj has a mild climate with pleasant weather, it's a popular year-round travel destination. However, most people find the best time to visit during the warmer months of early autumn, spring, and summer when temperatures average 27 degrees Celsius.
During these seasons, you can expect a lively nightlife, plenty of food to go around at the many cafes, and boat tours on the North Adriatic Sea that borders Croatia. Yet, if you don't mind the cold, visiting Rovinj during the winter isn't a terrible idea since it never snows and there are fewer crowds and discounts on accommodation and attractions.
