The Ancient City of Myra

In the former home of St. Nicholas you’ll find Santa’s sarcophagus, a Roman theatre, and ancient carved rock tombs.

About

First mentioned in the 2nd century BC, the Ancient City of Myra was one of the largest cities in the Lycian League. Over the centuries, it was ruled by a succession of empires, each of which left their mark on the city. Now known as Demre, the town still has monuments from its earliest days. Most famously, Saint Nicholas was one of Myra’s early bishops, and the 9th century church housing his original tomb remains a pilgrimage site even though his remains were stolen and supposedly moved to Bari. Also in town, you’ll find the remains of the Greco-Roman amphitheatre, which is decorated with theatrical masks and mythological scenes. However, the oldest and most impressive remains of the Ancient City of Myra are the 4th century BC rock tombs carved into the cliffs above the theatre.
