Lithuania
Lithuania’s oldest spa town offers healing waters, pleasant parks, and an increasingly-chic atmosphere.
First mentioned in 1636, Druskininkai became a popular destination in the 18th century when it was believed that its mineral-rich waters helped treat asthma and other ailments. In the early 19th century University of Vilnius professor Ignacy Fonberger began promoting Druskininkai to the population of Vilnius as a spa town. Today, Druskininkai is Lithuania’s oldest and chicest spa town, attracting both hip Lithuanians, and tourists from abroad. While visitors can of course head to Druskininkai’s famed spas, the town is centered around its peaceful park. Walking around a small lake, visitors can’t miss the red-brick belltower of St. Mary’s Church. A historic villa nearby houses the Druskininkai Museum, which features both historical exhibits about the town, as well as a special exhibition of local artists. M.K. Ciurlionis, one of Lithuania’s most famous artists, was from Druskininkai, and his family home is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.
