This picturesque waterfall and the surrounding landscape was formed by volcanic eruptions around the real life Mt. Doom.
The twenty-meter-tall cliff over which Taranaki Falls pours was created around 150,000 years ago when the Ruapehu volcano erupted, covering the land in lava. While these picturesque falls are the main attraction, reaching the cascade is an experience in itself. The hiking trail passes alpine grasslands, beech forests, and volcanic landscapes, with Taranaki Falls sitting at the midpoint of the loop. In addition to the falls, you’re treated to great views of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe, which are responsible for the layers of pumice and ash you’ll pass on the trail. Oh, and if you're a Lord of the Rings fan, Mount Ngauruhoe is Mt. Doom!
