Saluzzo
Explore this medieval town that was the setting of Chaucerâs Clerkâs Tale and Boccaccio's tale of Griselda.
About
Located on a hill, and originally enclosed by a double ring of walls, much of Saluzzoâs 15th century old town remains intact. A series of cobbled streets, steep staircases, churches and elegant palaces reward visitors who explore the old city center. The Piazza Castello, with its historic fountain, dominated by the 14th century Mole di Castiglia castle. Built in 1270 by the Marquis Tommaso I at the summit of the village, even criminals were able to experience the cityâs rich history, as the castle was used as a prison from the early 19th century until 1992. Of course no trip to Italy would be complete without sampling some local cuisine, and the local cheeses, such as "paglierine", arenât to be missed.
