Hurghada to El Quseir and Port Ghalib: Private day trip

El Quesir Fort was built by Egypt’s Ottoman rulers in the 16th century to defend the port from Portuguese pirate-traders, who were trying to strong-arm their way into trade with India and China. The fort was garrisoned until the 19th century when it was abandoned and left to fall into disrepair. Today, the fort has been partially restored for visitors, and houses several exhibits and artefacts that give a quick overview of local history and culture. You’ll find Dutch cannons, a pearl fishing boat, railroad carts, Beduin cultural artefacts in the northern bastion, and trade goods in the west. At the entrance, you’re likely to find some locals offering to give you a guided tour, which you can take them up on for some extra insights.
