A brief history of Riga
Riga's history dates back to medieval times. Although German bishop Albert von Buxhoevden officially founded the town in 1201, the area was already long inhabited. The town remained under German control until the bishop died in 1229.
From 1621, Riga and Vidzeme region was under the rule of King Gustav II Adolf, becoming the largest city in the Swedish Empire.
