Ancient Theatre at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus

This amphitheater is said to have some of the best acoustics of ancient Greek architectural wonders.

À propos

In 1988, the ancient amphitheater at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus joined the UNESCO World Heritage List for its representation of Ancient Grecian life in the 4th century BCE. At its height, the theatre hosted up to 14,000 spectators for plays, games, and worshiping of Asclepius, the god of medicine. Musical shows at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus were said to have healing properties for the sick, and thanks to the nearly perfect acoustics, actors’ voices can be heard even in the top row of this large amphitheater. In the 1930s, modern performances of classical plays began. Although they were paused during World War II, the tradition started back up again, and now a festival is held every summer. Actors and choirs perform during these annual festivities and attract crowds of locals and foreign visitors.
