Steinhorster Becken

An artificial dam and basin are now a protected reserve for many of Europe’s most common migratory birds.

À propos

The Steinhorst Basin has about 100 hectares of waterways, marshes, and shrubbery, which was created by damming the Ems, a river that travels through Northwest Germany before it flows into the North Sea. Many migratory birds spend winter at Steinhorster Becken, such as ducks, grey egrets, arctic geese, and cormorants. Other species, like cranes, falcons, and osprey, stop periodically during their annual migration. Spring and autumn are the best time for bird watchers and wildlife photographers to visit Steinhorst Basin. A hiking and biking trail of 2.8 miles (4.5 km) goes around the perimeter of the basin. The elevation on the trail is nearly flat, which is suitable for strollers and young children.
