Bad Mergentheim

The seat of the Teutonic Knights for centuries, this charming town is well known for its history, and the strongest mineral baths in Europe.

About

First mentioned in the 11th century, Bad Mergentheim was originally just a residence for the Counts of Hohenlohe. In the 13th century, the family gave the property to the Teutonic Knights, who made it the seat for their commander, which prompted rapid development. For centuries, the town flourished as a noble seat, with its now-famous mineral springs not being discovered until 1826. With the strongest sodium-sulfate water in all of Europe, visitors began flocking to the town to take advantage of their curative properties. At the heart of the charming old town, visitors will find the market square, lined with historic buildings, and centered around the 16th century Town Hall. The 13th century Minster St. John Church is filled with historic frescoes from the 13th to 16th centuries. However, the main attraction is the Castle of the Teutonic Order, which offers visitors a mixture of richly furnished rooms, and information about the legendary organization.
