Denmark
This UNESCO-listed town was entirely laid out by the Moravian Church so its inhabitants could live an ideal life.
Christiansfeld was built between 1773 and 1812 by the Moravian Church. Using the same pattern as Herrnhut, their first German town, Christiansfeld reflects their egalitarian and humanitarian values in its architecture and planning. Running parallel from the church, the two perfectly straight streets are lined with trees and nearly identical buildings, each made from the same yellow brick with red roofs. The church itself is a monument to simplicity, with a plain white interior accented only by modest chandeliers, and is the largest church hall without supporting beams in Denmark. For the Moravian Church, everyone is equal, even in death. At the tree-lined cemetery, the graves are identical, with sisters buried to the right and brethren buried to the left - just as they were seated at congregation. If you’re feeling peckish, or looking for a souvenir, the town was internationally known for their Gingerbread hearts at one time, and still bake them from scratch today.
