This ancient monastery was so respected that the Turkish Sultan issued a decree that no harm should come to it.
Founded in the 12th century, on top of the 1422 meter Mt Zlato, the hilltop has been a sacred site since antiquity. In the middle ages, the monastery was visited by the Serbian Emperor, who commented that ‘life of the monks is nothing less that the life of those living on Mount Sinai or the Holy Mount of Athos’. The 14th-century Church of Sveta Bogorodica, built on the site of a 6th-century basilica, is lined with vivid frescoes, including a rare Child Jesus. Earlier Roman remains are preserved inside, along with graves, inscriptions and monks' skulls. Following a fire, the site is under reconstruction, but openly offers its ancient artwork and commanding views to visitors.
