Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitorias

Emerging from tropical trees and reflected in the waters of Lagoa das Furnas, this magical funerary chapel is one of the oldest and most important religious sites in the region.

About

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias was erected in 1882 by José do Canto, a gentleman-farmer, in honor of his late wife. With its beautiful architecture and reverent function as an ode to both his wife and the Virgin Mary, observing the chapel is a mystical experience. The chapel replicates the grandeur of Gothic cathedrals found throughout Europe, set amidst the charming and rustic green spaces of the North Atlantic archipelago. Inside, an ornate altarpiece dazzles at the center and stunning frescoes adorn the walls and ceiling. From any point on the lake you can view the magnificent chapel, or pay a few euros admission to the nearby José do Canto Forest Garden for a closer look. From here, you can directly access the Chapel and its gardens, including other buildings scattered around the area.
