This beautiful ride-through cave is made even more fascinating by its surprising modern history.
The Fantastic Caverns were discovered by John Knox 1862, but kept secret until 1867 to prevent the Union or Confederate governments from exploiting it as a possible source of saltpeter (an ingredient in gunpowder). After being explored by 12 ladies from the Springfield Women's Athletic Club, the cave was used as everything from a KKK meeting place to a Prohibition speakeasy to a concert venue! Today, the Fantastic Caverns are probably the most fantastically easy way to see a cave. You explore the beautiful, formation-filled tunnels riding a sort of jeep train while learning about the cavern’s geology and history. For more information, please visit fantasticcaverns.com
