Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Hajnowka

The interior of this modern Orthodox church is filled with vibrant floor-to-ceiling polychromes, stained glass windows, and gilded icons.

About

In the 1970s, the population of Hajnówka doubled, with most of the influx coming from nearby Orthodox villages. To meet the demands of the growing parish, local authorities managed to convince the staunchly anti-religious Communist government for permission to erect a new church. Designed by the architecture professor Aleksander Grygorowicz from Poznań, his sweeping curves and white concrete garnered comparisons to Le Corbusier, while classic elements harken back to ancient orthodox church styles. The colorful polychromes covering the interior are a labour of love by Dymitrios Andonopoulos, who would travel from Greece to work on them. Unusual for an Orthodox church, stained glass is used heavily, being utilized in the many windows, and the cross-shaped chandelier. As each of the altars has a different dedication, visitors can also enjoy a range of glittering gilded icons.
