Isluga Church

In the high plateau area of Chile’s Isluga National Park stands this stunning testament to both religious heritage and Aymará culture.

About

The small town of Isluga harbors one of the most captivating religious edifices in the region–Isluga Church. While Isluga is mostly uninhabited throughout the year, it comes alive on ceremonial days and holidays, preserving many customs shared by pre-Columbian societies. The church, which dates back to the 18th century, boasts walls constructed from irregular stones, meticulously sealed with mortar, and adorned with lime plaster to create its iconic white facade. Alongside the church stands a remarkable 12-meter-high bell tower. Throughout history, the sole year-round inhabitant of Isluga has been the "fabriquero," entrusted with the church's guardianship. The village houses, too, have ceremonial significance and are used primarily during festivals for hosting family rituals and celebrations.
