Phicardou

Step back in time in this tiny, UNESCO-recognized traditional Cypriot village.

About

Located in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus, Fikardou is known for its well-preserved traditional architecture, including stone houses with red-tiled roofs and narrow streets. The village was founded by dissident groups from the nearby coastal towns who were forced out of their homes by anti-pagan regulations and foreign invasions. Deserted in the 19th century, its houses, built mainly in the 18th century, are a prime example of folk architecture, and are now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tiny church of Apostles Petros and Pavlos is the center of the village, as well as the busy Taverna Yianakos that serves traditional Cypriot food like slow-cooked lamb. To learn more about the history of the village and region, visit the Local Rural Museum, located in two renovated houses. You can also simply walk around the village on its cobbled streets and beautiful rural nature, taking in the view of the surrounding mountains.
