Portela Viewpoint

At an altitude of 670 meters, the Portela viewpoint offers sweeping views over the parish of Porto da Cruz and beyond. Located at the entrance to the levada walking route, the Ribeiro-Frio-to-Portela, it’s a popular stopping point for good reason. On the horizon, spot the grand geological formation of Penha d'Águia, also known as “Eagle Rock”, rising 600 meters high and marking the division between the municipalities of Machico and Santana. Feast your eyes upon the orange roof tiles that dot the valley below, capping the small houses that make up the municipality of Porto da Cruz. This vast view stretching over the eastern and northern parts of the island is not to be missed.
