This extraordinary archaeological excavation and UNESCO World Heritage Site has been recognised globally as one of the most significant locations for studying human fossils.
The Sangiran Early Man Site has captured the attention of scientists and researchers worldwide since the discovery of Homo erectus remains during the 1930’s. The formation of the site dates back millions of years when a dome was created through tectonic uplifts, and erosion eventually revealed abundant archaeological records. With a history spanning 2.4 million years, Sangiran offers remarkable insights to human faunal and cultural evolutions, with over 100 individuals of Homo erectus having been unearthed. Walking through the site is like glimpsing into the human evolution process from 1.5 million years ago. A small museum showcases replicas of the actual fossils found on the site and stands as a testament to the continuous quest for knowledge about our human ancestors.
