St. Mary's Church in Prenzlau

The elegance of High Gothic architecture is gets some local flair in this tenacious medieval church.

About

Built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier church, Prenzlau’s chief parish church, with its dual towers, and elaborate gables is a High Brick Gothic masterpiece. During World War II, the church was almost completely destroyed by fire. However, the church's Arcardian pillars, and its iconic gables with their elaborate tracery survived. Since 1970 the church has been undergoing restoration. Today, the church regularly hosts concerts, and despite its spartan interior, historic architectural elements still remains, and spritely visitors can climb the belltower for stupendous views of the town.
