One of the oldest churches in Bohemia, this abbey offers an architectural timeline spanning almost 1000 years.
Founded in 1193 by the blessed Hroznata, a Bohemian nobleman who’s currently a candidate for canonization, Tepla Monastery's original monks were transplants from Prague’s Strahov Monastery. While the abbey has enjoyed a mostly peaceful history, in 1525 there was a rebellion against the abbot and peace was not restored until the ringleaders were executed. Today, the abbey offers a condensed architectural timeline. The 17th century church began as a Romanesque structure, but additions were made to transition to a more Gothic aesthetic, while the library is an update made in 1900. The high altar of the church was sculpted in 1750. After Hroznata was beatified in 1897, his reliquary casket was moved to the apse of the church for display. The original burial place of Hroznata is marked by on the floor before the main altar, where his original sarcophagus also stands.
