The lighthouse of Gythio is not only a vital in helping ships navigate the nearby waters, but it's favourite spot for anyone travelling the coast looking for a scenic spot to stretch their legs. The lighthouse is sometimes open to the public and so visitors can see the inner workings of the structure as well as visit a small Maritime Museum. The nearby fortress of Tzanetakis was built around 1700 to protect the town and harbour of Gythio. Today it also houses the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani.
