Crater Lake Chema

Reached from the nearby town of Rubirizi, the two lakes are separated only by a thin wall of earth. At the correct vantage point you can see the contrasting colours of their waters. The smaller Lake Kamweru on the right is green and impenetrable (local legend attributes this to fish droppings), whilst its larger sibling, Lake Chema, is clear as glass. Legend has it that the former owner of the lake mysteriously transferred the water of Lake Nzuguto (now just a wetland) to Lake Kamweru, causing the locals of the former lake to die out. Learned geologists would have you believe, however, that the lakes were formed by volcanic activity and fault lines. Amazingly, it is highly possible that these are the only two conjoined lakes in Africa being connected by an underground river. Keep an eye out for wild monkeys that live in the vicinity of the lakes.
