Spanish Conquistadors, led by Hernan Cortes, made contact with the Guaycura in the 1530s when their boats came ashore off of the Gulf of California. The Spanish took note of the large pearls used for jewelry and decorations by the Guaycura and tried to violently take control of the area.
For about 50 years, the Spanish and native populations fought for control of natural resources until the Spanish succeeded in stripping the shore of most of the oysters for their pearls and forever altering the map of Latin America.
